For the Boys: The New Work Casual?
Updated: Oct 2, 2019
Every so often my husband will ask for my help putting together his outfits for a business trip. Today he is headed to a high-level internal meeting. The dress code: casual, even jeans are ok. Jeans? This threw us both for a loop. David works for a suit & tie company. We remember when casual Fridays came into style in the 1990s. It was a nice change but nowadays everyone is really confused.
The Associated Press reported this weekend on a Goldman Sachs internal memo announcing the company was moving “to a firmwide flexible dress code.” The problem was that for their 36,000 employees, this provided little to no clear direction.
As a professional stylist, I can put together work outfits for women that range from suits for client meetings to everyday office wear. It may include jeans but always as part of a fashionable, professional ensemble. For men, this is becoming more perplexing. In the AP article, I learned about something called the “midtown uniform” composed of slacks, button-down shirt and – get this – a fleece vest. What? In Colorado this is everyday wear (just substitute jeans for slacks). I told my husband this and he was horrified. I decided it was time to go shopping. I’ll post pictures of David’s new looks.
