Golden Globes Kick Off Award Season Fashion!

Updated: Oct 3, 2019

As you can imagine, nothing is more exciting to a fashionista than awards season (unless you can get a seat at the couture fashion shows).I have reviewed all the outfits I could find on live TV or online and I will give you my opinion of the best/worst as we no longer have Fashion Police to do the work for us (I remain always and forever a member of the Joan Rangers).

Let’s start with trends. As I predicted earlier this fall it is all about tulle. Celebrities wore it in every style and color. The innovative use of the fabric was really fun to see because tulle is not the easiest fabric to work with. My favorite was Alison Brie’s dress by Vera Wang.

Regarding color, while there was a variety, the night belonged to silver, particularly silver sequins. I was reminded of when silver sequin dresses were all the rage in my daughter’s high school years so if you still have a dress like this wear it! I don’t even think you need to worry about the style because it was shown in all different ways. Another interesting color was the different varieties of burgundy. And Pantone’s color of the year – coral – began to make an appearance (Patricia Clarkson, Constance Wu).

The third trend popping up was black bows. They were on the front of dresses, back of dresses, around the neck and even in the hair (Nicole Kidman). This is a great trend because it’s easy and inexpensive to do.

Now to my award winners (drum roll please):

Best Dressed Woman: Emily Blunt

It took me awhile to make a final decision but, in the end, I went with my initial thought, “she looks like a winner.” The fabric worked with the dress style, the color worked with her skin tone, the jewelry was just right plus the hair and make-up finished the outfit perfectly.

Honorable Mention: Anne Hathaway

She was on trend with the animal print looking sexy and distinct.

Worst Dressed Woman: Rachel Brosnahan

The color was not right for her and the dress style was boring.

Best Dressed Man: Justin Hartley

This man makes me swoon. I love a white dinner jacket. He looked so James Bond.

Honorable Mention: Darren Criss

That was a power Dior jacket worn by a winner.

Worst Dressed Man: Bradley Cooper

White jacket and pants? See Justin Hartley.

Best Hair: Thandie Newton

The style just worked perfectly with the dress.

Worst Hair: Kate Mara

‘Nuff said.

Sexiest Dress Woman: Halle Berry

While this dress might not have been her best, it’s amazing how well she’s done this for so long.

Most Overdressed Woman: Lady Gaga

Cornflower Blue Dress, Cornflower Blue Hair, Long Train, Huge Diamonds. Wow! It was an overkill for the Globes and while she did win an award for her Shallow song, her outfit was for a bigger win. I know it’s Gaga, but TV/Film awards are not like music and some humility never hurts.

Most Original Woman: Janalle Monae

I just love how this woman puts things together and it’s no surprise she was in Chanel. Gaga should take note.

Next up is the Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 27. Can't wait to see what the actors are wearing!
