Gallery Walls: Never Out of Style
Updated: Oct 1, 2019
This past Sunday as I was reading the Denver Post, I came across an article on gallery walls. There is some confusion out there that gallery walls are out of style. In my opinion gallery walls are never out of style. They aren’t a trend, they’re a staple.
In case you are unfamiliar with this decorating scheme, a gallery wall (or salon wall) is a collection of art on a wall. When I was decorating my first home in San Francisco, gallery walls were typically symmetrical frames of birds or flowers. Today, gallery walls are less defined. They can be different ways to present a topic such as family or travel. They can represent a decorating theme such a country French & Japanese, the theme for my house (I love to juxtapose decorating styles). Or they might be pieces presented in the same color.
Gallery walls are not inexpensive, particularly if the size of the wall is large. My first wall was enormous and required large pieces which is how I began my collection of southwester art. Often I will use antique quilts for a large wall which ads warmth to a room the same way tapestries did many centuries ago.
Creating a gallery wall is much easier today. You can go online and order a gallery wall, but the size of the wall remains the determining factor and anything involving framing is never cheap. But this remains one of the best investments you can make in decorating your home.
